Types of pool equipment

Variable speed and water feature pumps are designed for efficient, reliable pool and spa operation. Variable speed pumps adjust flow to reduce energy use and equipment wear, while water feature pumps provide consistent performance for waterfalls and fountains, supporting continuous operation, proper circulation, and long-term system reliability in residential and commercial applications.

Gas pool and spa heaters provide fast, reliable heating regardless of outdoor temperatures, allowing consistent water comfort year-round. They deliver quick recovery times, precise temperature control, and dependable performance for both residential and commercial pools, making them ideal for high-demand applications and frequent spa use.

Heat pumps provide energy-efficient pool and spa heating by transferring ambient heat rather than generating it. They offer lower operating costs, steady temperature maintenance, and quiet operation, making them well suited for extended swim seasons, mild climates, and applications where efficiency and long-term savings are a priority.

D.E. Pool Filters — Advantages

D.E. filters provide the highest level of water clarity available in pool filtration. They filter particles as small as 2–5 microns, making them ideal for pools where exceptional clarity is required.

Key advantages:

Superior filtration and water clarity

Effective removal of fine debris, algae, and contaminants

Well suited for high-use pools and demanding water conditions

Consistent performance when properly maintained

Cartridge Pool Filters — Advantages

Cartridge filters offer simplicity, efficiency, and reduced water waste. They filter particles typically in the 10–20 micron range, which is sufficient for most residential and many commercial applications.

Key advantages:

No backwashing required, conserving water

Lower operating pressure improves pump efficiency

Easy maintenance with removable, cleanable elements

Fewer moving parts and simpler system design

Pool Automation and Sanitation

Pool Controls

A pool automation controller centrally manages pool and spa equipment, allowing coordinated control of pumps, heaters, lighting, water features, and sanitation systems. Automation improves energy efficiency, maintains consistent operation, reduces manual intervention, and enables scheduled or remote control, resulting in improved reliability, simplified maintenance, and enhanced convenience for both residential and commercial pool systems

  • UV Sanitation Systems

UV sanitation systems use ultraviolet light to neutralize bacteria, viruses, and chloramine byproducts as water passes through the chamber. UV improves water quality, reduces combined chlorine, and enhances swimmer comfort while working alongside traditional sanitizers to maintain safe, clear pool and spa water.

  • AOP (Advanced Oxidation Process) Systems

AOP systems combine UV light with ozone or hydrogen peroxide to create powerful hydroxyl radicals that destroy organic contaminants at a molecular level. This process significantly improves water clarity, reduces chemical demand, and provides an added layer of sanitation for high-use residential and commercial pools.

  • Salt Chlorination Systems

Salt systems generate chlorine on-site through electrolysis, providing continuous, consistent sanitation without manual dosing. They reduce chemical handling, maintain stable chlorine levels, and produce softer-feeling water, making them a popular choice for residential pools and commercial applications seeking simplified operation and improved swimmer comfort.

Description Title

California Commercial Pool Chemical Feeder Requirement

California public pool regulations require commercial pools and spas to be equipped with approved, continuously operating chemical feed systems. Manual chemical dosing is not permitted for public or commercial aquatic facilities.

Chemical feeders must:

  • Automatically dispense sanitizer and, where required, pH-adjusting chemicals

  • Operate whenever the circulation system is running

  • Maintain required disinfectant and pH levels at all times

  • Be installed and maintained in accordance with California Health & Safety Code and Title 22 regulations

  • Failure to maintain operational chemical feeders may result in inspection violations, citations, or facility closure until compliance is restored.

  • (Applies to commercial pools, spas, apartments, HOAs, hotels, gyms, and public facilities.)

Chemical Feeder vs ORP / pH Controller — Explanation

Chemical Feeders

A chemical feeder is a mechanical or automated device that injects a preset amount of sanitizer (and sometimes acid) into the pool circulation system. Feeders provide consistent chemical delivery but operate on fixed output settings, not real-time water conditions.

  • Required for commercial pool compliance

  • Delivers sanitizer at a constant rate

  • Does not measure water chemistry

Output must be manually adjusted as conditions change

ORP / pH Controllers

An ORP/pH controller is an automated control system that measures water chemistry in real time and adjusts chemical feed rates accordingly. These systems work in conjunction with chemical feeders to maintain precise sanitizer and pH levels.

  • Continuously monitors sanitizer effectiveness (ORP) and pH

  • Automatically adjusts chemical dosing based on demand

  • Improves stability under varying bather loads

Commonly required or strongly recommended for high-use commercial pools
